Fix = fasten (something) securely in a particular place or position; direct one’s eyes, attention, or mind steadily or unwaveringly toward; a difficult or awkward situation from which it is hard to extricate oneself; a predicament; a dose of a narcotic drug to which one is addicted.
I planned to write about the Texas definition of fixin’ which means about to do something, in a moment I will do x, y, z, when the last words in the dictionary definition of fix convicted me. A dose. Addicted.
I thought a fix was drugs as it says in the dictionary, yet in the reading of those words conviction began gripping me and I felt God grabbing my attention as He whispered, “Are you addicted to fixing things? Do you truly think you can fix anything? This is MY job, not yours. Let it go and let Me BE God, the ‘fix’ you need and the fixer of ALL things, people, places, and times.”
So I turned to The Message to search the word FIX. 53 times, Eugene Peterson uses the word FIX, 8 of those in the New Testament. So let us fix our eyes on Jesus and what He has to say to us about the word “fix” through The Message…
Colossians 1:18-20
He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he’s there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross.
Supreme. Fixed and fitted because of His precious blood. Thank You, Jesus.
Matthew 7:24-25
“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
Home improvements…or Foundation? The Foundation. Jesus. Fixed to the Rock of Jesus. Thank You, Lord God for Your Rock we are fixed to.
Romans 12:1-2
[ Place Your Life Before God ] So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
Well-adjusted to our culture??? Fit in without thinking??? Yes, Lord, let me fix my attention on You to be changed from the inside out.
2 Timothy 2:8-13
Fix this picture firmly in your mind: Jesus, descended from the line of David, raised from the dead. It’s what you’ve heard from me all along. It’s what I’m sitting in jail for right now—but God’s Word isn’t in jail! That’s why I stick it out here—so that everyone God calls will get in on the salvation of Christ in all its glory. This is a sure thing: If we die with him, we’ll live with him; If we stick it out with him, we’ll rule with him; If we turn our backs on him, he’ll turn his back on us; If we give up on him, he does not give up— for there’s no way he can be false to himself.
Yes, Lord, fix the picture of Jesus firmly in my mind. Forever fixed on You to stick it out for the salvation of Jesus Christ.
