Persevere

PERSEVERE

Persevere = continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success.

There are a whole list of synonyms:

persist, continue, carry on, go on, keep on, keep going, struggle on, hammer away, be persistent, be determined, see/follow something through, keep at it, press on/ahead, not take no for an answer, be tenacious, stand one’s ground, stand fast/firm, hold on, go the distance, stay the course, plod on, stop at nothing, leave no stone unturned…

Ok, so that‘s Miriam Webster. Now let’s see what God’s Word has to say about persevering…

1 Corinthians 13:7 {Love} It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Yes, true love is lasting, like You love us, Father. Thank You for demonstrating Your love for us…

2 Corinthians 12:12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.

[Tweet “Continue O Lord! Send Your signs, wonders and miracles to us…today.”]

1 Timothy 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Watch your life and doctrine closely…Yes, watch what you believe, so you and your hearers are saved. Holy Father God, thank You for reminding us what we need to pay strict attention to and WHY. Your saving grace…

Hebrews 10:19 [ A Call to Persevere in Faith ] Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,

Thank You Father that the veil was torn when Jesus shed His blood for us, so we CAN enter the Most Holy Place without intercession. You opened the door for us….

Hebrews 10:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

[Tweet “Do: receive. Thank You God. You say go and do today just like you did in ancient days.”]

Go + Do = GOD. O!

Yes, Holy Father, when we GO and DO what You command us to , YOU show up and show off in the most magnificent ways. Thank You, God.

Hebrews 11:27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

Saw Him who is invisible…May we see You too, Lord God. In all we do for Your honor, glory and power, may perseverance be a strength we bring to bear.

James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Persevere

Crown of Life?!

Yes, Lord, I choose to persevere in love for you.

James 5:11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Job persevered in spite of losing EVERYTHING, yes, everything, he owned. Yet God redeemed and brought about an even richer blessing upon Job. Compassionate God, thank You for your mercy.

Jude 1:17-18 [ A Call to Persevere ] But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”

Scoffers who follow their own ungodly desires? Oh, yes, Lord, they are rampant! Last times? I don’t know about that. My mother says we are 2000 years closer that we were when Jesus was here the first time. Amen!

[Tweet “Revelation 2:3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.”]

Thank you Father, for recognizing the hardships and the challenged that we walk through. I praise God that we can STILL praise Your holy name in public places. That we CAN gather together to worship You. Thank You that You renew our youth, so we do not grow weary.

Persevere. I think marathoners and triathletes understand that word, persevere..

Lord, help us persevere in loving and worshiping you like a world class athlete perseveres in their sport.

  1. I really like the picture you used this week. I couldn’t contain the tears as that ballroom dancer foxtrotted across the finish line in Boston…perseverance at it’s finest! Thanks God!!!! And thanks Susan!

    1. Yes ma’am! And my cousin crossed the finish line once again. He was denied that right in 2013 as the bombs exploded about 5 minutes BEFORE he finished. On the 45th anniversary of winning the Boston Marathon in 1968. Yep. Amby Burfoot is my cousin. Susan Burfoot Mead. Kinda cool…

  2. I am so thankful for God’s Word!!! There’s just no denying the truth! Perseverance is worth it when it draws us closer to the Lord 🙂

  3. GO+DO = GOD O. I am a visual person so this resonated so deeply. I will not forget it. I remain committed to do what he’s called and I will watch Him work! O!!! My God, my God!

  4. Just this morning I was thinking about you, Susan, and how strong He is in you concerning the path you’ve walked. Some would falter, not you. You’re cheering the army, saying, “Run on, my friends. He is worthy.” I think I’ll come alongside you and “run” like the marathoners, like the elite athletes. All praise to God.

    1. Come on! Some days it’s a walk. Others it’s a crawl. Others it’s running. And sometimes you just have to curl up in His lap and let Him comfort you. He is so good to us!

  5. We have to have some grit to make it in this life don’t we Susan? Whew, it ain’t for sissies. Oh Holy Spirit, show up and show out in our lives! We need you!

Thanks for cheering us on today!

  6. I love the James 5:11 verse, “As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” That’s wonderful motivation for persevering!
    Blessings,

  7. I love the word persevere and the power behind it. To me it means to “keep on keeping on” even when going forward is the last thing you want to do. I love the verses you chose to illustrate this word especially Hebrews 10:36. I pray we all may persevere i strength toward all God call us to be. Have a beautiful day!
